Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,

Welcome to another exciting year at Cabrillo.  We hope you are enjoying your summer.  We are eager to see you in September and are preparing to make sure we have a smooth school opening.  Our faculty and staff are working hard to assure we provide you with an excellent education in a nurturing, safe environment.  If it’s your first year at Cabrillo we are positive you will feel at home.  We hope and expect every one of you to take advantage of our wonderful curriculum, instruction and programs.  We are certain you will thrive at Cabrillo!

We are so proud and humbled to start our 5th year together as Co-Principals of Cabrillo.  We love working with an amazing and dedicated faculty of teachers and support staff.  Together we have created countless opportunities for every student to become involved and learn beyond the classroom.  Our Small Learning Communities continue to flourish and provide our students with relevant, real-world experiences.  From working on and launching a rocket with NASA and a local aerospace firm, to being part of our award winning programs such as NJROTC and the Dance Team, to working as interns for companies such as Boeing, to serving as part of an actual jury in Teen Court, our students are immersed and benefit from our unique approach to learning.

We are happy to inform our 9th grade families that this year will be the fourth year of ACCESS (Academy of College and Career Exploration for Student Success), our 9th grade academy. ACCESS is part of Cabrillo’s unique approach to transitioning middle school students to high school.  The program has been a success and this year will mark the first time every grade level has gone through the ACCESS program.  Every year ACCESS gets better as we listen to the voices and feedback of our parents and students who have enjoyed the support of this program.  We are confident that you will enjoy what our dedicated ACCESS staff has put in place to support every 9th grader.

By the time we start school in September our new aquatic facility, with its pristine 44 meter competition-size pool is scheduled to be open.  This is exciting news as our Cabrillo Students will receive swimming instruction during Physical Education for the first time ever and be equal to the rest of the LBUSD population. The Aquatics Center will also give us the opportunity to field swimming and water polo teams as well as servicing our community.  Aside from the Aquatic Center, there is more construction happening at Cabrillo.  When school opens in September as you approach the school on Willard, you will see additional open parking spaces that will be available and accessible to visitors during school hours.

Parents, please help us to accomplish our goals by giving us your support.  It is extremely important that our students are here on time, attend every day, abide by the dress code, exemplify integrity and respect, and come prepared to learn.  A strong parent partnership is vital for the success of our students.  Please join the PTSA, Booster Clubs, and become active visitors on our campus.  Our Parent Center is open daily and always in need of your support.  We can succeed only with your help!

Respectfully,

Alejandro Vega                                                                                               Elio R. Mendoza, Ed.D.
