Cabrillo Staff,

This weekend, District Facilities will be painting parking stalls in all parking lots. This will impact access on campus in the following ways:

1) On Saturday, December 9, parking will only be available along the south side of Jaguar lane (entrance only on Santa Fe). Students will only have parking access to the visitor’s parking on Saturday. NO parking in large lot between the Gym and AGL will be available.

2) There will be no access to parking lots on Sunday, December 10.

Please be aware that the location of handicap parking stalls will be moved to the first parking area on Jaguar Lane off Santa Fe. Ave. (near the 700 building) and near 1100 & 1600 bungalows. The current handicap stalls outside the north & west gyms will be remarked the same. On Monday, December 11, pay attention to painted curbs which will be adjusted due to fire safety regulations. Parking regulations will be strictly enforced.

Questions? Contact Ms. Alexander.

Stepping into one of the structures that make up the Cabrillo High School campus in Long Beach might leave one thinking they’ve entered the wrong government building.

There’s a jury box, a witness chair and a judge’s bench flanked by the U.S. and California flags. The “Home of the Cabrillo Jaguars” blanket hanging on the wall is the only sign that this unique courtroom is part of a school.

Affiliated with the Los Angeles County Teen Court Diversion Program, the facility gives students in the Cabrillo Academy of Law and Justice (CAL-J) more than just a glimpse of the legal profession. They can serve on a jury, work as a bailiff or a clerk, and have access to internships — while still taking Advanced Placement (AP) courses that prepare them for college.

CAL-J is one of four “pathway” programs at Cabrillo and part of the Long Beach Unified School District’s (LBUSD) implementation of Linked Learning — a statewide effort to weave together rigorous academics with practical career and technical skills in collaboration with industry partners.

“Part of it is the relevance piece — how we get them to come to school,” says Cabrillo Principal Cheryl Cornejo. “That’s huge for our kids.” For complete article, click here.

School is your first and most important job. Attending school daily and being on time is important to your overall success in school. It also provides daily practice for two of the most important skills that lead to success in college and career. At Cabrillo, it is expected that students arrive to class on time - every period, every day.

When students are tardy less than 15 minutes late to periods 1/2, or less than 5 minutes late to all other periods, the following steps will be taken:

  1. Students will head directly to class.
  2. Teachers will mark students tardy at any time they arrive late to class.
  3. Once a student has accumulated 10 tardies (Across all periods), Saturday School will be assigned.

When students are tardy more than 15 minutes late to periods 1/2, or more than 5 minutes late to all other periods, the following steps will be taken:

  1. Teachers will mark students tardy at any time they arrive late to class. Students will be assigned an after-school tardy detention.
  2. Students are expected to self-report to detention on either the same day the tardy occurred or the following day. Students who self-report to detention on day 1 or 2 will serve a 15-minute detention.
  3. Students who fail to self-report to detention will be pulled from periods 5/6 or 7/8 on the third day. Students who had to be pulled out of class will serve a 30-minute detention. This covers the 15-minute tardy detention & an additional 15 for failing to serve the detention assigned.
  4. Deans and CSO's begin to pull students at 2:20 PM. On Mondays, Tuesday and Fridays, Students will serve detentions in OCS and surrounding bungalows. On Tuesdays and Wednesday detentions are served at the lunch benches.
  5. Saturday School attendance will clear 10 tardies on a student’s school record, but will not clear any tardy detentions owed.

Again, the expectation is that students arrive to class on time – every period, every day. However, when tardy, it becomes the student’s responsibility to self-report to detention.

The CAPP College Going Culture Grant has entered its 4th and final year at Cabrillo promoting an expansion of our college going efforts. Over the last 4 years, he grant has promoted a “culture of caring”, teacher PD, schoolwide promotion of college-going, COPE training, parent workshops, and even a summer program for incoming freshmen.

As part of the data collection, the grant is once more asking for our faculty to complete the CAPP Grant Teacher Survey to assess how we have progressed since we began the grant.

As a way to incentivize our faculty to participate, the CAPP Grant office is offering to host a breakfast / lunch on CAPP!

If 90% of the faculty complete the survey, CAPP will provide a meal ($5/person) to the faculty. This is just a small token of their appreciation and a way for them to say thank you for all of your effort and support over the last 4 years. Sweet, right? Who doesn’t like free food. Below is the link to the survey. The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete. Teacher Survey: http://uclaed.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_e2tPfSw2WB5LqTz

Please take a few minutes to respond to the questions so we can get the faculty’s collective input. The final report will be shared in the spring.

Thank you in advance.

Cabrillo High School’s Port of Long Beach Academy of Global Logistics starts the school year as one of 68 academies joining a national network of scholars who will develop Android mobile apps and compete in an annual national app challenge.

The Cabrillo academy is part of the Lenovo Scholar Network, which supports 118 academies and 5,000 students nationwide.  The network helps to enable the next generation of developers and entrepreneurs through science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.

Working with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology App Inventor, available at appinventor.mit.edu, now part of the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab, Lenovo Scholar Network students have the chance to develop Android mobile apps using Lenovo devices.  Lenovo is a leading producer of personal computers, smartphones and tablets.

Lenovo and the National Academy Foundation (NAF) created the Mobile App Development Competition in 2014 to encourage greater interest among underserved high school students in STEM subjects, while providing them with entrepreneurial and technology skills needed to pursue careers in computer science, programming and engineering.  NAF and MIT collaborate to provide technical assistance to Lenovo Scholar Network participants, and to develop support materials for teachers using MIT App Inventor.

New partnership benefits include allowing students to earn certification credit, part of Lenovo’s commitment as a hiring partner.

Cabrillo High School is part of NAF, a national network of education, business and community leaders who work together to ensure that high school students are ready for college and careers.  In 2016, NAF academies reported that 96 percent of seniors graduated and most continued their education.

Welcome to Cabrillo High Schools’ 2017-18 school year.  We hope your summer is going well and you are keeping busy either helping with chores around the house, maybe working at a job or just having fun.  Whatever it is you are doing, we look forward to seeing you during registration in August.  If this is going to be your first year at Cabrillo, we welcome you.  Our staff has been working hard to prepare for your arrival to ensure you have a great high school experience.

We look forward to increasing the number of students enrolling in Advanced Placement and completing A-G classes this year.  There will be many opportunities for students to receive support and guidance to be successful in this coursework through the Counseling Center, AVID program, AP tutorials, and other school-wide support programs.  The Cabrillo Promise is to have all students complete at least one Honors or Advanced Placement class prior to graduation.

Our Career Pathways are thriving.  Pathway teachers have been working diligently over the summer to provide more career exposure and opportunities for students.  Some of our Academy of Global Logistics (AGL) teachers participated in an externship this summer and gained valuable knowledge to share with students. The partnership that AGL is building with the Port of Long Beach is going to be fantastic. We look forward to watching our students participate in global logistics curriculum and activities at the Long Beach Port. Likewise, our other academic teachers have put in a lot of time and effort into developing Common Core lessons in preparation for the spring SBAC testing.

The campus has been alive this summer with athletics, band, cheer, NJROTC, and other student activities.  The students are working hard to prepare for the school year.  We hope to have a lot of success in our future competitions.

Parents, please help us to accomplish our goals by giving us your support.  It is extremely important that our students are here on time, attend every day, abide by the dress code, exemplify integrity and respect, and come prepared to learn.  A strong parent partnership is vital for the success of our students.  Our Parent Center is open daily, offers a variety of parent oriented classes and can always use your support.  We can succeed only with your help!  Jaguar Pride!

Respectfully,

Cheryl A. Cornejo

Principal

We train anywhere and everywhere - from runs to the Queen Mary and back - to fitness work in the pool, bike room and weight rooms.
We train playing futsal in the gyms or tennis courts. We also train playing soccer tennis and soccer volleyball. But most of our training is done on the BEST soccer field in the district.  I hope to see as many players come out as possible. Good Luck to all!

Congratulations to our senior scholar/athlete Lian Lumada, Water Polo Captain and Goalie for the Lady Jags who finished the season with All League Honors and added another top ten state record with a total of eight CIF State Records in three categories. Lian is the current #1 "Saves per Game" record holder.  She is #4 in season saves and #8 in career saves. Lian is also an excellent role model for how a new player to the sport, with fierce determination, can achieve the highest honors and lead by example. GO JAGS!

Each spring, $5,000 scholarships are awarded to two African American and two Hispanic students currently completing their senior year of high school in a member district of the Council of the Great City Schools.

This Holiday Season, Cabrillo Wrap will participate in our first annual Service Project, The Giving Tree. We would like to make a difference in the lives of less fortunate children in our community. What better way than to serve children in our own backyard.  We have partnered with WRAP Hudson and will be giving gifts to students in their WRAP Program, and we need your help to make this happen.

Wrap Hudson has identified twenty-one kindergarten and first grade students who would benefit from our project. We would love to bring them a little extra cheer and happiness this holiday season. In order to accomplish our goal we need and are asking for your help.

The children have decorated paper ornaments which include a list of wish items.  These ornaments are hanging from a tree in the WRAP Office, room 1603. We are hoping that you will find it in your heart to choose an ornament and purchase one (1) of the gifts listed on the wish list (No item requested cost more than $20).  Please purchase the gift, wrap it and return it to the WRAP Office, room 1603, no later than Friday, December, 16th. Cabrillo WRAP students will be delivering the gifts to Hudson on Monday, December 19th.

We hope we can count on your participation. I am sure the Hudson children will be grateful for your kindness and generosity. Your gift may be the only one they unwrap this year.

Thank you so much for your participation.
