"Receiving the Mark Bixby Leadership Award from the Rotary Club was a huge honor. The Rotary Club truly believes in rewarding those who work hard. They have a unique process of requiring a video submission, two personal essays and an interview for finalist. The interview was to test the confidence and honesty of the applicant. It was the most fun and dynamic scholarship I have been a part of. I was able to meet with some of the most successful people in Long Beach and receive countless connections on top of the $3000.- award. I was given a chance to speak and give honor to Cabrillo High School, my mentors, and the Rotary Club. If I could describe this experience in one word, it would be: "Unforgettable."

All levels of girls and boys beat their opponents with our varsity boys tripling the score over Rancho's boys. Representatives from the military will be at Cabrillo High School on March 28th to administer the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, or ASVAB in Rm 309. The ASVAB measures your strengths, weaknesses, and potential for future success. This exam isn't just for those going to the military. The results can be useful regardless of you joining the military or not. If you are unsure of what you would like to do after you graduate from high school, the ASVAB is a great tool to help aid in your career decision.
Juniors and Seniors interested in taking this test should see and sign up in the NJROTC office (Bldg 1427) or the Career Center (Bldg. 701).

The Theatre Department has a need that you may be able to help fulfill. If you have white dress shirts that are in decent shape that you would like to donate, we could use them. We are looking for shirts that are:
  • White
  • Collared
  • Button down or polo
  • For boys or girls
We typically have at least one production a year (the Black History Show: A Tribute to Prince on Friday, February 23rd at 7:00 PM in the Cabrillo Auditorium) where students where white shirts, and there are always a few students who don’t have on and are unable to purchase or borrow one. Thank you for your consideration, and we hope to see you at the show.

Cabrillo High School’s Reach to the Stars after school program – which brings Ivy League grads and industry leaders in science, technology, literature and the arts to students – recently hosted a presentation by the director of the nonprofit Discovery Lab Global. The organization recruits high school and college students globally offering them opportunities to work on biomedical, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and space science projects through the use of 3D virtual reality.

“It is amazing what student innovators are working on through 3D virtual reality,” said Cabrillo teacher Ethel Laczko, who facilitates the after school program.

Providing the presentation was DLG Director Rob Williams, a retired Air Force officer who ran a multi-million-dollar Air Force strategic workforce development program for 10 years as its founding director before retiring to start up DLG. He is a former engineering professor in brain signal processing, a Defense Advance Research Projects Agency program manager in advanced drone technologies, and an American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Engineer of the Year Award  recipient.

Williams described projects that have the potential to support start-up concepts to assist the elderly and Alzheimer patients, as well as global science, technology, math and engineering (STEM) outreach, including a "Mission to Mars" virtual reality project conducted by students in Peru.  Go to discoverylabglobal.com for more information.

Cabrillo’s Reach to the Stars program started in 2012 and encourages students to attend some of the nation’s top colleges and universities.  Other program activities include workshops on leadership, college entrance exams and interviews.

AP Students

The attached directions explain how to register for each AP Exam you will be taking this May for the AP courses you are currently enrolled in, and for the AP Exams you wish to challenge (are not currently enrolled in the course).

The portal on Student Vue to sign up for your exams opens on February 5th and the registration deadline is on February 25th.

The cost for each exam is only $5 each (because the state, district and Cabrillo cover the remainder, which is close to $100.00 per exam, or more for AP Capstone courses! $110+ each).

Each student needs to pay the banker in full, for all exams, by March 10th, 2018.

There are no refunds, and you may be fined the full cost of the exam, and forfeit the fee assistance the state, district and Cabrillo generously provide, if you do not show on exam day, per your AP contract.

If you have a financial burden, in need of a scholarship for the $5 fee, please let Ms. Godfrey know.

Please see Ms. Godfrey or Mr. Razo if you have any questions or technical difficulties.

Ms. Godfrey

Cabrillo High School recently hosted a Global Economic Summit with more than 150 Cabrillo and Poly High School students participating.

Teams of students from Cabrillo’s Global Logistics Academy and Poly’s Pacific Rim program gathered in the gymnasium, where each team represented a different country. The Global Economic Summit event is modeled after the International Economic Summit Institute at Boise State University. The hands-on activity teaches concepts related to international economics and globalization.

During the event, students set up tables, wore costumes, created trade alliances, joined trading and banking sessions, and competed in a global issues debate. Long Beach CaLL, a partnership among the Long Beach Unified School District, Long Beach City College and Cal State Long Beach, provided judges who evaluated table displays and costumes.  Judges were industry professionals representing a wide range of careers.

The summit model has gained national recognition as an effective educational program for teaching economics, finance and technology.  Students gain a multicultural understanding of how the world works and what they can do to prepare for life as a global citizen.

Learn more about Long Beach CaLL at longbeachcall.org, and learn more about the summit events at econsummit.org.

Cabrillo High School has found success in a new Pathway program that emphasizes workforce principles in the global trade and logistics career paths. The program — called The Port of Long Beach Academy of Global Logistics (AGL) — replaced Cabrillo's Academy of Business Pathway program two years ago. "We wanted to make sure that every student would be eligible in the workforce," Alejandra Guitron, community relations specialist at the Port of Long Beach, said. "Some students are not able to afford college or have to immediately go to work to make money. This program took all of that into consideration during planning." AGL's programming expands beyond high school business classes, Guitron added. The high school coordinates the curriculum with the Port of Long Beach and other established businesses, providing students with real-world business experience in the international trade sector.

Cabrillo Staff,

This weekend, District Facilities will be painting parking stalls in all parking lots. This will impact access on campus in the following ways:

1) On Saturday, December 9, parking will only be available along the south side of Jaguar lane (entrance only on Santa Fe). Students will only have parking access to the visitor’s parking on Saturday. NO parking in large lot between the Gym and AGL will be available.

2) There will be no access to parking lots on Sunday, December 10.

Please be aware that the location of handicap parking stalls will be moved to the first parking area on Jaguar Lane off Santa Fe. Ave. (near the 700 building) and near 1100 & 1600 bungalows. The current handicap stalls outside the north & west gyms will be remarked the same. On Monday, December 11, pay attention to painted curbs which will be adjusted due to fire safety regulations. Parking regulations will be strictly enforced.

Questions? Contact Ms. Alexander.

Stepping into one of the structures that make up the Cabrillo High School campus in Long Beach might leave one thinking they’ve entered the wrong government building.

There’s a jury box, a witness chair and a judge’s bench flanked by the U.S. and California flags. The “Home of the Cabrillo Jaguars” blanket hanging on the wall is the only sign that this unique courtroom is part of a school.

Affiliated with the Los Angeles County Teen Court Diversion Program, the facility gives students in the Cabrillo Academy of Law and Justice (CAL-J) more than just a glimpse of the legal profession. They can serve on a jury, work as a bailiff or a clerk, and have access to internships — while still taking Advanced Placement (AP) courses that prepare them for college.

CAL-J is one of four “pathway” programs at Cabrillo and part of the Long Beach Unified School District’s (LBUSD) implementation of Linked Learning — a statewide effort to weave together rigorous academics with practical career and technical skills in collaboration with industry partners.

“Part of it is the relevance piece — how we get them to come to school,” says Cabrillo Principal Cheryl Cornejo. “That’s huge for our kids.” For complete article, click here.

School is your first and most important job. Attending school daily and being on time is important to your overall success in school. It also provides daily practice for two of the most important skills that lead to success in college and career. At Cabrillo, it is expected that students arrive to class on time - every period, every day.

When students are tardy less than 15 minutes late to periods 1/2, or less than 5 minutes late to all other periods, the following steps will be taken:

  1. Students will head directly to class.
  2. Teachers will mark students tardy at any time they arrive late to class.
  3. Once a student has accumulated 10 tardies (Across all periods), Saturday School will be assigned.

When students are tardy more than 15 minutes late to periods 1/2, or more than 5 minutes late to all other periods, the following steps will be taken:

  1. Teachers will mark students tardy at any time they arrive late to class. Students will be assigned an after-school tardy detention.
  2. Students are expected to self-report to detention on either the same day the tardy occurred or the following day. Students who self-report to detention on day 1 or 2 will serve a 15-minute detention.
  3. Students who fail to self-report to detention will be pulled from periods 5/6 or 7/8 on the third day. Students who had to be pulled out of class will serve a 30-minute detention. This covers the 15-minute tardy detention & an additional 15 for failing to serve the detention assigned.
  4. Deans and CSO's begin to pull students at 2:20 PM. On Mondays, Tuesday and Fridays, Students will serve detentions in OCS and surrounding bungalows. On Tuesdays and Wednesday detentions are served at the lunch benches.
  5. Saturday School attendance will clear 10 tardies on a student’s school record, but will not clear any tardy detentions owed.

Again, the expectation is that students arrive to class on time – every period, every day. However, when tardy, it becomes the student’s responsibility to self-report to detention.

Cabrillo High School’s Port of Long Beach Academy of Global Logistics starts the school year as one of 68 academies joining a national network of scholars who will develop Android mobile apps and compete in an annual national app challenge.

The Cabrillo academy is part of the Lenovo Scholar Network, which supports 118 academies and 5,000 students nationwide.  The network helps to enable the next generation of developers and entrepreneurs through science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.

Working with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology App Inventor, available at appinventor.mit.edu, now part of the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab, Lenovo Scholar Network students have the chance to develop Android mobile apps using Lenovo devices.  Lenovo is a leading producer of personal computers, smartphones and tablets.

Lenovo and the National Academy Foundation (NAF) created the Mobile App Development Competition in 2014 to encourage greater interest among underserved high school students in STEM subjects, while providing them with entrepreneurial and technology skills needed to pursue careers in computer science, programming and engineering.  NAF and MIT collaborate to provide technical assistance to Lenovo Scholar Network participants, and to develop support materials for teachers using MIT App Inventor.

New partnership benefits include allowing students to earn certification credit, part of Lenovo’s commitment as a hiring partner.

Cabrillo High School is part of NAF, a national network of education, business and community leaders who work together to ensure that high school students are ready for college and careers.  In 2016, NAF academies reported that 96 percent of seniors graduated and most continued their education.
