You may choose from these two novels.

One text is the required summer reading for Accelerated English 3-4.

A 45-minute timed writing exam will be given on the novel two weeks after we return in September.

These novels are available in the bookroom and are on reserve at Barnes and Noble’s Towne Center location.

Assignment:15 typed quotes and responses are required from the text to illustrate your understanding of one specific theme. Remember that the theme is the work’s message about a subject addressed in the literature, and that theme is always stated in the form of a sentence. Some possible subjects to use as starting points might include the following:

The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver: prejudice, violence, family, the plight of illegal immigrants, the environment, womanhood, motherhood, rebirth or redemption.
Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe: gender, family, respect and reputation, fear, religion, traditions and customs, sin, fate and free will, fear.

You must respond to these quotes in the following manner:

  • Include page number of where you found the quote
  • All analyzed quotes must be marked with a post-it “flag” placed directly next to it in the text.
  • Paraphrase what the quote is saying in your own words.
  • Who is speaking?
  • Who is being spoken to?
  • What is being spoken about?
  • The context in which the quote was spoken (what was happening at the time the quote was said)

Be sure to choose meaningful quotes from the text and copy the entire quote in quotation marks.

All work must be word-processed using 12 point font and double-spacing and is due on the day of the timed writing exam.

p. 19 “That was when I began to hate them, and my hatred remains our only link them today They were our first oppressors. They were the first faces of hell and death. ”

Response Elie is speaking about his 1st experience in the ghettos of his country Hungary. He says the Hungarian Police were the first to treat him and other Jews like worthless animals, and his hatred for them is their only connection today. He makes this statement as the Jews are being forced into the ghettos. It can be inferred that this caused a fundamental change in him. This statement relates to the theme because this former boy of God lives with hatred in his heart and has been forever changed by his experience.

Mr. Federici - AP Studio (Drawing & 2D Design) Summer’s Art Production 16–17


You have signed up for a Studio AP Class and you are about to embark on a distinctive academic experience. Building a successful art portfolio for submission to the College Board can be a daunting task, which will also give you a tremendous sense of pride and accomplishment.

In order to achieve such a goal, you must be able to work independently in the classroom and at home, at an intense pace, under deadline pressures.

The work that you will produce in the next couple of months will relieve some of the pressure you will be feeling during the school year.

Attached is a list of projects you need to tackle at home. You may choose to produce more samples for each category or create something that it is not even part of this list. No matter what you do, it must be done professionally by using a variety of media and it must show your artistic talents, your craftsmanship and dedication. Remember that some of this work may be included in your portfolio for final submission, next May.

Create a project every two weeks from the list below and bring in the first week of the Fall Semester to share in class with Mrs. Barisoff and the AP students.

The Music Department's Summer Rehearsals are on June 29th, July 6th, July 13th, and July 20th. from 1:00 P.M. – 3:00 P.M. 

Band Camp starts on August 10th through August 26th from 8:00 am – 1:00 pm. 


Music Boot Camp is a requirement. If your child needs to miss one or two meetings due to vacation, please write me (Ms. Gladstone) a note and I will excuse him/her from the rehearsals.

However, all band students must attend to be included in the field show and the class, as an exciting part of their musical education. We suggest that all students dress according to the August weather and wear supportive marching shoes (no sandals or open toed shoes). Students should also bring sunscreen, ample bottled water, and a light snack for their break. Students will not be allowed to leave the Cabrillo campus during the hours of 8:00 – 1:00With prior approval, visitors are allowed during rehearsals.  

We truly appreciate a donation of two (2) cases of water to help keep our kids hydrated.

At its third annual Celebrating Education event, on Thursday, May 12, the Port of Long Beach announced a new initiative to broaden its educational outreach through a specialized academy at Cabrillo High School. The new academy will be a four-year global trade and logistics pathway that will provide a unique opportunity to bring real world experiences to the classroom. The Port of Long Beach Academy of Global Logistics was announced by Harbor Commission Vice President Lou Anne Bynum. Mayor Robert Garcia, education leaders, teachers and others were also in attendance celebrating the Port’s education accomplishments. See attachment for complete story.
